Read Matthew 14:28-31 (https://bit.ly/39BpjAv)
One of my favorite songs is “Oceans” by Hillsong United and I am reminded of that song whenever I read these verses. Peter begins to sink as soon as he diverts his attention off of Jesus and onto the distracting waves and wind. But when Peter asks for help, Jesus does not ignore his cries; He reaches out His hand. In life, we know what we need to do, but we don’t always know how to effectively fight off distraction. And in the 21st Century becoming ‘in-distract-able’ is not an easy skill to develop! But how comforting is it to know that even in our sin, Jesus is there with open arms to lift us up. When we feel like we are drowning and that the confusion of this world is taking our attention away from God’s will for us, remember these lyrics: “And I will call upon your name, and keep my eyes above the waves. When oceans rise, my soul will rest in your embrace. For I am yours and you are mine”.
