“Submission” can be a hot-button term because of how it’s perceived in contemporary culture. The implication is that women are inferior to men. To that end, this verse often gets taken out of context. However, Ephesians 5:23-33 is meant to encourage unity in marriage. Remember, Paul’s instruction to wives can’t be separated from his teaching to men to “love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”. Those are some pretty big sandals to fill! This passage is simply overarching advice to both sexes and a very beautiful passage that shares the duties of each partner and how they can be there for each other. Furthermore, Scripture testifies to the equality of husband and wife in terms of personhood and worth in the sight of God. In no way should these verses bring one partner’s value above the other. Instead, they should be used to encourage love, understanding, and unity in marriage.
Ephesians 5:23 NIV
For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.
