The Last Supper was no ordinary meal. Jesus and His disciples were celebrating Passover, perhaps the most important feast on the Jewish calendar. Freedom from bondage to the Egyptians was something to shout about! This holiday honored how God instructed His people to sacrifice a lamb and smear its blood on their doorposts, so death would pass over their homes while all Egypt’s firstborn were dying. As Jesus celebrated this feast with His disciples, He symbolically pointed to the fact that He was the Lamb of God. The power of His blood would free all men from their sins once and for all. Three years earlier at Jesus’ baptism, John the Baptist had declared these very words, in essence announcing that Jesus was the promised Messiah. When we celebrate communion, we acknowledge the importance of His sacrifice. Jesus is our Savior, Who indeed takes away the sins of the world.
John 1:29 NIV
