Our culture educates us from childhood to seek self-fulfillment, to do whatever we desire, whatever we think completes us. We buy into this mindset. Happiness is found in self-centered longings for vacations, houses, cars … stuff. But this is the antithesis of what Christ taught and lived. Our God-become-Man, Jesus Christ, lived self-sacrifice. He never owned a home, never married, never accumulated rooms full of things, never had a hidden savings stash. He invested His life daily in people, neither indulging Himself nor pursuing self-interests. His single-minded purpose was to give God’s love and grace and provide the sacrifice for our sin in a bloody death. He exemplified servanthood. As believers in Jesus, what shall we do with His example? Do we ignore it and continue in our self-propelled directions? Or, if Christ is our Lord, how can we emulate Him? How can we put others above ourselves and live like servants today?
Philippians 2:3-8 NIV
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!
