As followers of Jesus, we should be concerned about our influence and impression we leave with others. We want others to know that we follow Jesus, so hopefully, in turn, others will follow Him as well. This verse spells out clearly how the world will be able to identify followers of Jesus. Unfortunately, unnecessary layers have been added to this verse that can hinder or even spoil our influence. Actions we do or don’t do. Words we say or don’t say. Tweets we like or retweet. People we do or don’t hang around. Places we go or don’t go. Signs we display. Ballots we fill out. Where we sit on Sunday mornings. While these things deserve our careful attention, they should never supersede, or worse yet, influence us to withhold the indicator Jesus gave us to show we follow Him – how we love others.
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
