The story of Jesus’ birth is often painted as a “Hallmark movie”. We see two loving parents visited by an angel, told their son would be the Messiah. We hear joyous “hallelujahs” while wise men bring gifts. Jesus’s birth certainly was joyous, but His entry into our world grimly reflected humanity. His parents would face ridicule, as they were not yet married. The Roman emperor demanded a census, forcing Joseph and Mary to travel, even though Mary was about to give birth. Once in Bethlehem, they place to stay was a cold stable with hay to lay their heads upon. Jesus would lay in a manager, a long box for animal feed. YUCK! Not so picture perfect. By design, Jesus’ birth resembled the state of our messy world. By design, his death on a cross was messy and painful. His birth and his death show the promises God had made, to offer hope and peace to all who would follow Him. He is “God with us.”
Matthew 1:22-23 NIV
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
In cooperation with orders from the PA Department of Health, and out of a heart of concern and care for our community, masks are now required for everyone ages 2+ while inside Parker Hill Church buildings.
