From very early in creation, God recognized it was not good for man to be alone. After creating animals and birds, He saw that there was still no suitable helper for Adam. Therefore, God created Eve out of Adam’s rib and brought her to Adam. He created both man and woman and designed a beautiful marriage union. Genesis 2:18-21 demonstrates perfectly the unity within a marriage. Through marriage, a husband and wife become one flesh and create a healthy dependency on one another. Neither spouse can do everything alone. But together, with Christ at the center, we are able to use our strengths to support the other’s weaknesses and build on each other’s strengths. However, we need to remember that becoming one does not permit unhealthy boundaries or codependency. In order to keep Godly unity, it’s important to maintain practical wisdom and independence in one’s own growth and experiencing of life.
Genesis 2:18-21 NIV
The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.
