There are a lot of upside-down ideas floating around in this world. One of the most pervasive is the idea that life is about self-fulfillment. And it’s no wonder that this idea is so commonly accepted because it speaks directly to our nature and our tendency to focus on ourselves. We are not born wanting to go out of our way to care about others. Our basic operating mode is “What’s in it for me?”
But God designed us for something else entirely. His purpose for us is to experience the true fullness of life only when we set ourselves aside, and focus on others.
- What are some of the ways our culture pushes us to focus on just ourselves?
- Has there been someone in your life who inspired you (or changed you) by their self-sacrifice?
- Can you give an example of a time when you “denied yourself” to follow God’s will? What was the result of that?
