A little girl names all of her dolls. A zookeeper knows the name of each animal. But a rancher doesn’t name each cow in the herd. What does it mean to name something? It means that thing is special. You care for it. You’ll be upset if it’s lost. Scientists and astronomers have named stars for centuries. In the northern hemisphere, we can see the Big Dipper, the North Star, and Orion. In the southern hemisphere, they can see the Southern Cross. Only with very powerful telescopes can we see Omega Centauri or far-off nebulae. Those are the ones we can see, and so they’re the ones we have named. God has named them all. A rancher has hundreds of cattle and doesn’t bother to name them. God holds millions of stars in His hands and knows their names. And He knows your name. You’re that special.
Isaiah 40:26 NIV
Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.
Psalms 91:14 NIV
“Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
