In the Old Testament, the Jews were commanded to never drink blood. So, imagine the shock waves that echoed through the disciples as Jesus told them to drink His blood. Yes, it was symbolic, but Jesus was making a point. The disciples had been living under an old covenant, but this covenant was new, and the rules were new, too. Jesus was declaring that the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away our sins, but His blood can. No more sacrifices year after year. His blood is the final sacrifice. Remember that. Ponder its meaning. Think about it often. The disciples could not grasp the full knowledge of what He was telling them, but He was hinting at what was about to happen—Jesus was going to the cross and that would change the world forever.
1 Corinthians 11:25 NIV
In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
