‘Lean not to your own understanding’. I like using the Amplified Bible and, in that translation, the phrase is ‘do not rely on your own insight or understanding’. Our insight or understanding tends to lean to what we know and/or what is comfortable. I have often heard the analogy that we have a dashboard view of life, only seeing what’s directly ahead. Conversely, God has a helicopter view; He can see in all directions at once and much further as well. It’s a simplistic concept, but it illustrates that our insight is so limited compared to what God’s insight is. When God asks us to wait, it is because He can see what is ahead. Let us acknowledge Him, and allow God to direct our path. And the timing.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
