In his book The Sun Does Shine, Anthony Ray Hinton tells of his 30-year incarceration for a murder he didn’t commit and of the work of his lawyer, Bryan Stevenson, who fought for 16 years to free him. Stevenson, a Harvard Law graduate, could have had a six-figure income with all the accompanying amenities. Instead, this modern believer in Jesus Christ chose a lifestyle of sacrifice. Burdened by wrongful convictions in the criminal justice system, he devoted himself to advocating for the poor and vulnerable, challenging cases of injustice and promoting equality. Bryan has never married or had children—a lifestyle, he said, incompatible with the requirements of his mission. His sacrifice for others has brought freedom and blessing to hundreds of people. God has transformed Bryan’s self-denial and servanthood into self-fulfillment, a gift God gives to those who follow Him. In your personal self-sacrifices, be assured, the Son Will Shine through you, too.
When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them— he remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free, the LORD gives sight to the blind, the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down, the LORD loves the righteous.
