“Hail the flesh, the God-Head see, hail the incarnate deity. Pleased as man with man to dwell – Jesus, our Emmanuel!” Jesus came to Earth as flesh; He interacted with humans as a human, in the middle of our mess. Throughout His ministry, His disciples believed Jesus would reign as King in His earthly form. After His death and resurrection, they realized His sovereignty transcended the material world. In this passage, Thomas wasn’t immediately willing to believe that Jesus was alive. But, instead of rebuking Thomas, Jesus offered him further evidence. Many of us are resistant to faith in Christ because it’s hard to believe in something we cannot see. We live in a world that demands absolute physical proof. But God calls us to love and accept Him through faith. Let us bow our heads and give all to Christ; accept His gift without further proof. Remember, you don’t have to understand everything to believe something!
John 20:24-27 NIV
Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
