I may not have needed an AA or cancer survivor support group, but I have been in need of others, desperately. Ones who care because they love me and because they want what’s best for me. Life can be hard, real hard sometimes. It’s always been a struggle of mine to ask for or accept help. But there was a time not so long ago when I was beyond grateful for the love and support of “my group”, intertwined with family, neighbors, friends and my church. I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am today if it hadn’t been for those people who showed up for me and my kids. A simple telephone call, a dinner made, flowers or a note. Lots of hugs, tears shared and, all of a sudden, the dark reality of my life wasn’t so dark anymore. If God’s plan for my life is nothing more than for me to rally around those same people when their life gets messy, I would surely be more than fulfilled. We all need people.
John 15:12-13 NIV
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
