Sabbath speaks of rest and worship. Maybe Jesus told His disciples that God created Sabbath for people because the rules surrounding their celebration of Sabbath had become burdensome, not restful. God didn’t rest on the seventh day of creation because He needed to. Perhaps He rested to show us how to order our lives. Back in the fifties people understood the concept of Sabbath whether they were Christians or not. Church was the only thing open on Sunday. A day of rest was built into our culture. Not anymore. Sundays we grocery shop or transport our kids to events. Even our vacations can be packed with activity, leaving us feeling far from rested. Too often we only rest when we collapse exhausted, or get sick. Sound familiar? God knows our minds and bodies need rest to be restored. Let’s be mindful to carve out time for that.
