The Bible is filled with stories of risk-takers who were prompted by God to step out in faith, often putting their lives in jeopardy. Were those go-for-broke risk-takers only for another era? Abram is an example. God told Abram to leave his country and his people and go to an unknown land. He was 75, not a good age for pulling up stakes and resettling. Abandoning his familiar life, Abram trekked thousands of miles for years with only his animals and strong legs for transport. But Abram had a history with God. Their intimate trust relationship, cultivated through decades of Abram’s obedience and God’s faithfulness, gave Abram courage to follow God into the unknown. He believed God and His promises. This is faith God rewards. He became the father of a nation and the Messiah’s family. Have the stakes changed for us in 2021? No, learning to trust our promise-keeping, faithful God is still the way to face risk.
Genesis 12:1-4 NIV
The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.
