The view on time is vastly different around the world. In some cultures, being on time is actually being late while in other cultures, a meeting time is a mere suggestion. To Americans, punctuality is valued, so verse 8 must strike panic in the hearts of many of us. Admittedly, I get some palpitations about the whole ‘1,000 years is a day’ part. God is not so fixed on time; He’s the creator of it and time is completely under His control. These verses are showing us how God is asking us to be patient, as He is so exceedingly patient with us. He isn’t being a slacker, nor is He unable to complete what needs to be done. He simply has a plan, and when the timing is right, He’ll bring it to pass.
2 Peter 3:8-9 NIV
But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
