Robert Fulghum’s famous poem, “All I Ever Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” begins with this line, “These are the things I learned … Share everything.” During playtime in any pre-school or kindergarten, the words “That’s mine!” often echo around the room. But, as we mature, it’s assumed the selfish grabbing to make something our own is transformed into generosity and civility. Unfortunately, our self-indulgence doesn’t disappear. It becomes a deceitful mindset, as destructive as cancer. Jesus was all about sharing, about giving others our time, finances, and, in His case, His very life. The first-century Christians followed Jesus’ teaching closely. They shared everything they had; no one claimed any of his possessions were his own. We 21st century Christians, bombarded by a culture of accumulation and the “It’s Mine!” mentality, struggle sometimes to obey Christ’s simple command, “Share.” Sharing … it’s a sacrifice that pleases God.
So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
