“Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country”. This famous quote, spoken by John F. Kennedy, Jr. in his inaugural address, challenged Americans to contribute in some way to the public good. Jesus illustrates a similar theme in His parable of the wedding guests. Those who exalt themselves and expect to be served will be demeaned. However, those who tend to others before themselves will be exalted. Jesus is the ultimate example of putting others first. He chose to minster to others ahead of His own needs and exhibited a different measure of greatness: service! We, too, are called to serve according to our spiritual gifts and strength. Resolve to join in what God is doing in the world – even if it seems small or insignificant. What is your next step in reaching out to others in NEPA?
Luke 14:7-11 NIV
When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
