Jesus told His disciples He was the Bread of Life. Back in Jesus’ day, people didn’t eat the American diet. Bread was their main sustenance. So maybe if Jesus was chatting with you over coffee He would have said, “I’m your meat and potatoes. I’m your main meal. Coffee (or fill in the blank) may give you a lift, but it can’t sustain you. When you dine with Me, I’m giving you energy and strength to do what I’ve called you to do.” When Jesus sat down to dine with His disciples at the Last Supper, He wanted them to know that He, the Bread of Life, would always nourish them. When we take communion, we are reminded that the life and words of Jesus will always feed our spirits.
