As a teenager, dish duty was my responsibility every night after dinner. I bellyached about it frequently. The showdown came when I refused to do them for two consecutive nights. My mother didn’t cave. She let the accumulating dishes sit in their stacks on the counter, hardening into inedible cement. On night three, I decided I’d better wash them. By that time it took every scrubber in the kitchen and twice the time to remove the detritus. It was a yucky lesson to learn, but mom was sovereign. Because she loved me, she controlled and directed circumstances to teach me important lessons about obedience and responsibility. I saw the error of my ways and the folly of trying to run from Mom. Sometimes God puts us in deep water (or filthy dishwater), but behind it all, He is allowing and directing what happens to teach lessons that mold and shape our characters. Our loving God is sovereign in good and bad circumstances.
Psalms 119:71 NIV
It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
Psalms 119:75 NIV
I know, LORD, that your laws are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.
